Tasks:

The ministry is in charge of managing all natural resources. The Water Supply Division provides quality drinking water with efficient pressure. It is also responsible for technical training and the design and maintenance of water supply projects.

The Hydraulic Research Laboratory (WLA) of the Ministry of Public Works

Tasks:

One of the main purposes of the Hydraulic Research Division is to promote the optimal utilization, management and protection of water resources. It is the principal agency in the country that collects and publishes hydrologic, hydraulic and water quality data and information and conducts investigations and research. Activities regarding water resources are coordinated by this agency that also makes recommendations to the government.
The Hydraulic Research Division is in charge of the national hydrometric observation system as well as the collection of basic hydraulic and water quality data. Investigations are conducted in the field of hydrology, hydraulics, and water quality to support the development of water resources, water management and civil engineering works.

The Meteorological Service Suriname (MDS) of the Ministry of Public Works

Tasks:

  • Perform observations
  • Maintain a national meteorological databank
  • Participate in the international meteorological network
  • Compile weather forecasts from national and international information
  • Perform special measurements for the benefit of research projects

The Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Tourism

Tasks:

Winning, producing and distributing drinking water in Suriname.

The Hydraulic Laboratory (WBL)

Data resources:

Bathymetry, current velocity, waves, sediments, water levels (5 locations in the Bigipan MUMA), meteorological data (precipitation, vaporization, temperature, sunlight, atmospheric humidity, wind velocity), water quality measurements, monthly discharge measurements (across a year) on various locations in the Bigipan area, other observations such as flows, flow patterns, mud bank movements.

National Zoological Collection (NZCS and CMO)

Tasks:

  • Research in the field of zoological biodiversity, environment and nature conservation
  • Curate and extend the national zoological collections
  • Provide services in the field of zoological biodiversity, environment and nature conservation
  • Disseminate the knowledge on biodiversity, environment and nature conservation in support of a sustainable development of Surinam

Data resources:

Animals collected in the field and referenced in literature. All data is digitized in Excel databases and the National Biodiversity Database. Specimens are curated in the collections. Water quality and mercury pollution in water, bottom sediment, soil, aquatic fauna and humans is measured in the field or sampled and analyzed in the laboratory. Mercury data are digitized in a GIS database.
